How to dry orange slices

If you read my first ever post on this blog then you will know that this year I'm trying to have a completely plastic free Christmas and I'm trying to share all my plastic free gift and decoration ideas with you! My initial idea was to do a post about my orange and newspaper zero waste tinsel that I plan on making, or even my orange and clove baubles (which smell incredible) but I thought before any of that, a quick tutorial on how you actually dry the oranges wouldn't go amiss! That then means that for my future Christmas Decor posts I can just link everyone back to this one without boring you silly with masses of instruction.

So here we go, the perfect baked oranges, perfect for your zero waste Christmas:

1. Gather your supplies!

Before you do anything you need to preheat your oven to around 120 and optionally line a baking tray with paper, I chose not to do this as I also use kitchen roll in this process and like to minimise the amount of waste I create when DIY-ing. With regards to the oranges the bigger the better here, don't bother with mandarins or tangerines you need the slices as big as possible, so proper oranges are best for the job.

2. Slice

Make sure your slices are thick. I cut a couple of mine too thin and they burnt almost instantly. Make sure they are a perfect circle!

3. Squeeze

This is the most technical step but even then this is a fairly simple process (exactly the kind of DIY I love). You need to place your orange slices between two pieces of kitchen roll and squeeze! Push down until they are almost all juiced out but you have to be careful not to push straight through the membrane of the oranges and cause any tears, otherwise as said in step one, they will burn.

Finally - Bake!

Lastly you need to put your oranges in to the oven for around 2 hours and make sure you turn them every 30 minutes. Pending on your oven and the thickness of the slices this time may vary slightly so keep an eye on them. What you're looking for is crisp and slightly browned.

Once all this is done there are many different things you can do with your oranges (more on this later) but for now, let me know if you've already got any great ideas for zero waste Christmas decor, I love sharing ideas with you all!
